Description
of the Five-Faced Hanuman Mantra
श्री पराशरः
Shri Parashara said to Miatreya:
पुरा बदरिकारण्ये नरनारायण प्रभू सुदर्शनस्य महतः पञ्चवक्त्र हनूमतः॥
चक्रतुः पञ्चवक्त्राणां उपदेशं मुदान्वितौ तानेव हनुमन्मन्त्रान् पार्वत्यै शङ्करोब्रवीत्॥
In
ancient times, in the Badarika forest, Lord NaraNarayana imparted the great five-faced Hanuman mantras to
Lord Shiva
which
Lord Shiva then imparted to Parvati with great joy.
तानद्य तव वक्ष्यामि श्रुणु सर्वार्थ साधकान् भक्तोसीति न मे किंचित् तव वाच्यं द्विजोत्तम॥
मन्त्रोद्धार प्रवक्ष्यामि मन्त्रमाहात्म्य मेत्र च मन्त्रप्रयोग मनघ - सान्तच्छृणु योगिराट्॥
सारात्सारतरं मन्त्रं पञ्चवक्त्रेषु पञ्च च तन्मन्त्रं सारव द्वक्ष्ये - मन्त्रोद्वार पुरस्सरम्॥
Now, I will tell you those mantras, which are the key to achieving all goals.
As you are a devoted disciple, I have nothing to withhold from you, O best of
the twice-born.
I will describe the five mantras related to the five faces of Hanuman, with
elucidation of the mantras.
I will explain the essence of the mantras, their significance, and their
application. Listen carefully, O king of yogis.
Mantra for the First Face: (Hanuman – East)
वेदादि रुच्चरेत्पूर्व पाशबीज मनन्तरम् वायुबीज मथोच्चार्य - प्राणेति तदनन्तरम्॥
First, the
Vedas, followed by the Bija mantra of Pasha (ām), then the Bija mantra of Vayu (yam),
and then the mantra of life (īm).
नन्दनाय पदचोक्त्वा महच्छन्दं ततोच्चरेत् वीरशब्द ततोच्चार्य वराय तदनन्तरम्॥
Invoke
the name of “Nandanaya”, then recite the great meter.
After that, utter the word "Veera" (hero) and then "Varaya" (the best).
सर्वशत्रु पदं चोक्त्वा संहार पदमुच्चरेत् कारिणे पदमुच्चार्य - रामदूताय चोच्चरेत्॥
After
mentioning "all enemies", recite the destruction mantra. Then, utter
the words "Karine" (the doer) and "Ramadootaya" (the messenger of Rama).
हुं फट स्वाहेति चोच्चार्य मन्त्रोऽय कप्रिवक्त्रतः पत्रिंशदक्षरो मन्त्री षट्कर्म फलसाधनः॥
(Conclude
with "Hum Phat Swaha", thus forming the 35-letter mantra from the
first face, which is capable of yielding the results of six actions.
Mantra for the Second Face: (Narasimha – South)
द्वितीयं दक्षिणं वक्त्रं नृसिंहाख्यं भयङ्करम् तारपाशमयं बीजं - वायुबीजं ततोच्चरेत्॥
(The
second, right face is called Narasimha, which is fearsome. It includes the Bija
mantra of Tara (star) and then the Bija mantra of Vayu (wind).)
नृसिंहवीज मुच्चार्य अंकुशं बीज मुच्चरेत्
Recite
the Nrsimha Bija mantra followed by the Ankusa Bija mantra.
नमो भगवते पश्चात् ज्वलत्कालानलेत्युक्त्वा रूपायेति पदं ततः सर्वराक्षस शब्दं च चतुर्थतं विदारणम् नृसिंहायेति चोच्चरेत्
Say
"Namo Bhagavate" and then "Jwalatkaalanaletya" followed by "Roopaya". After that, say "Sarvarakshasa"
and "Chaturthata Vidaranam".Conclude with "Nrsimhaya".
सर्वत्र परिपूर्णाय हुं फट् स्वाहेति चोच्चरेत् पंचवक्त्रमनोर्मध्ये द्वितीय वदनस्य तु चतुश्चत्वारिंशदथ मन्त्रोऽयं सर्वसिद्धिदः
For the
second face, which is Narasimha, recite "Sarvatra
Paripoornaya Hum Phat Swaha". This 44-letter
mantra grants all accomplishments.
Mantra for the Third Face: (Garuda – West)
तृतीयं गारुडं वक्त्रं प्रणव पाशबीजं च ततो नरमृगं बीजं
The third
face is Garuda. Start with Pranava (Om) and then the Pasha Bija mantra,
followed by the Nara-mriga Bija mantra.
मन्त्रं वक्ष्यामि सुव्रत वायुबीज ततोच्चरेत् बीजं गारुड मेव च उच्चरेदकुश बीजं नमश्शब्दं ततोच्चरेत्
Recite
the Vayu Bija mantra, followed by the Garuda Bija mantra. Then say the Akusha Bija mantra, followed by the word "Namah".
गारुडेति पदचोक्त्वा वदनाय पद वदेत् महच्छन्दं ततोच्चार्य वीर शब्दं ततोच्चरेत्
Say
"Garudeti" and then "Vadanaya". Recite the great meter and then the word
"Veera".
वराय पदमुच्चार्यं वायुपुत्राय चोच्चरेत् विषछेदि द्विरुच्चार्य सीताशोक विनाशन सर्वशब्दं ततोच्चार्य विषकृन्तन उच्चरेत्
Say
"Varaya" and then "Vayuputraya".
Recite "Vishacheddi" twice, followed by
"Sitaashoka Vinashana",
and then "Sarva", and finally "Vishakrintana".
तृतीयं वदनात्मकम् हुं फट् स्वाहा समायुक्तो पञ्चाशदुत्तरं त्रीणि वर्णात्मक मिद मनुः गारुडाननज विप्र विपरोगादि नाशनम्
For the
third face, which is Garuda, the mantra ends with "Hum Phat Swaha".
This 53-letter mantra is powerful in destroying diseases and poisons.
Mantra for the Fourth Face: (Varaha
– North)
चतुर्थ क्रोड वक्त्रं व स्मरणात्सर्व पावनं तारं पाशं समुच्चार्य नृसिंह तार्क्ष्य बीजे च सर्वशत्रुनिबर्हणम् वक्ष्यामि मुनिपुङ्गव
वायुबीज मनन्तरम् बराह तदनन्तरम् अकुशं बीज मुच्चार्य वराहवदनाय च समस्तपद मुच्चार्य - नागलोकपदं पठेत्
प्रकम्पन पदं वोक्त्वा चतुर्थ्यन्तं प्रयत्नतः वायु पुत्राय चोच्चार्य - सर्वशत्रुपदं ततः संहारकारिणे शब्द- हुं फट् स्वाहा समन्वितम्
The
fourth face is Varaha. Start with "Tara"
and "Pasha". Recite the Nrsimha and Garuda
Bija mantras for the destruction of all enemies.
Say the
Vayu Bija mantra, followed by the Varaha Bija mantra.
Recite the Akusha Bija mantra, and then "Varahavadanaya". Conclude with the "Nagaloka" mantra for the complete effect. Continue
with the vibration प्रकम्पन (Prakampana) word,
followed by the fourth part.
Recite Vayuputraya, followed by the words for destruction of all
enemies (Sarvashatru Samharakarine),
then say the words "Hum Phat Swaha" with it.
चतुर्थमन्त्रो व्यनध सर्वसिद्धि प्रदायकः चत्वारिंश तथा पञ्च वर्णमन्त्रः प्रकीर्तितः मन्त्रोऽय सौकरं वक्त्रं - महदैश्वर्य कारणम्
That is
the fourth mantra granting all accomplishments. This 45-lettered boar-faced one
mantra is renowned for granting great prosperity.
Fifth Face (Hayagriva - Upward):
पञ्चमं तु हयग्रीवं मन्त्रं च श्रुणु योगिराट्
The fifth
face is Hayagriva. Listen to its mantra, O king of yogis.
तारं पाशमय बीजं नृसिंहं गारुडं चैव - वायुबीज मनन्तरम् वाराहं तदनन्तरम् हयग्रीवं च बीजं च - अंकुशं बीज मुच्चरेत् मयाय पदमुच्चरेत् सर्ववेद पदं चोक्त्वा - हयग्रीवं पदं चोक्त्वा कपिशब्द ततोच्चार्य - वदनाय ततोच्चरेत् वीराय तदनन्तरम् हुं फट् स्वाहा समायुक्तो यास्य वदनो मनुः त्रयस्त्रिंशद्वर्ण रूपो मन्त्रोऽय पञ्चमं मुने
Start
with the Tara and Pasha Bija mantras.
Follow
with the Nrsimha and Garuda Bija mantras, then the
Vayu Bija mantra, and after that, the Varaha Bija
mantra.
Recite
the Hayagriva Bija mantra and then the Ankusa Bija
mantra, followed by the word "Mayaya".
Say
"Sarvaveda" and then "Hayagriva",
followed by the word "Kapi". Then say "Vadanaya"
and "Viraya".
This
mantra ends with "Hum Phat Swaha" and is composed of 33 letters. It
is the mantra for the fifth face, O sage.
एवं पञ्चमनून् सभ्य - गेकत्रैव जपेन्मुने एकादशोत्तर शतद्वय वर्णात्मको सौ परमन्त्रगणो जप्यो - एकदा सिद्धि कांक्षिणः
These
five mantras should be recited together. The combined mantra is 121 letters
long and should be chanted by those seeking attainment.
अष्टाक्षरो महामन्त्रो पञ्चवक्त्र हनूमतः
The great eight-letter mantra of the five-faced
Hanuman
सर्वसिद्धिकरो मन्त्रो दुर्वासोपासित पुरा सारात्सारतरो मन्त्रो - सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः
This
mantra bestows all accomplishments. It was once worshiped by Durvasa. It is the essence
of essences, truly without doubt.
आदौ वानरबीजं च तथा पचा नृसिंहकम् ताक्ष्यं वाराह बीजे च पञ्चमं तु ह्याननम्
Begin
with the Vanara Bija, then Nrsimha,
Garuda, and Varaha Bija mantras, followed by the
fifth face.
The
eight-letter mantra starts with "Pranava" (Om) and ends with
"Namah".
Salutation to Hanuman, who has the faces
of a Vanara (monkey), Narasimha (man-lion), Garuda
(eagle), Varaha (boar), and Hayagriva (horse).
Adorned with various
ornaments and having fifteen eyes (3 for each face) that shine brightly.
Holding different weapons
such as a mountain, noose, trident, club, plough, skull-topped staff, mudras
(hand gestures), sword, shield, and flag.
Riding on a celestial horse
and blazing with radiance.
Japa (Recitation) and Dhyana (Meditation):
Engage in meditation before
recitation and recite the mantra while meditating. Both practices are
interdependent but should be performed together for maximum efficacy. One
should never recite the mantra without dhyana.
Start with the Tara Bija Mantra (Om).
Recite "Namo Bhagavate" and then "Anjaneyam"
twice.
Follow with "Viraya" and then "Hanumat".
"Sakaleti". Follow with the words for
destruction of enemies: "Hram Hrim Hum". End with "Hum Phat Swaha".
Letters: 28
Purashcharana: Perform 10,000 recitations for
purification.
Offerings: Feed ten Brahmins after the
completion of recitations.
Homa Preparation:
Ingredients: Gather the three sweet
substances (Trimadhuni) which typically include
honey, sugar, and jaggery.Mix
these with Charu (a kind of rice) and clarified
butter (ghee).
Nyasa: Perform the Nyasa (a ritual act of
touching different parts of the body while reciting specific mantras)
carefully, following the main mantra procedures.
Procedure: Perform the Homa (sacrificial fire ritual) according to one's
capability, aiming for at least 1000 mantra recitations or a minimum of 100.
Sincerity: Ensure the ritual is
performed with full faith and sincerity. Avoid deceit or performing it without
complete belief, as it may invoke the deity's wrath.
Matrika Nyasa (Placement of Divine Letters):
Outer and Inner Matrika
Nyasa:
This involves the placement of divine letters (Matrikas)
on the body, both externally and internally.
This
ritual is highly beneficial and has been outlined by wise seers.
Internal Nyasa: Known as Antarmatrika Vinyaasa, it involves the placement of letters within the
subtle energy centers (chakras) of the body.
The
fifty syllables of the Sanskrit alphabet are assigned to different chakras
starting from the Muladhara (root) to the Sahasrara (crown).
Recite the specific letters for each chakra with associated bija mantras adding
"Hamsa Soham".
Place the letters mentally at each petal of the chakra lotuses starting from
the base to the crown.
Use
these mantras during meditation for deeper integration and alignment.
Confidentiality: These procedures are
confidential and should be taught by a knowledgeable guru.
Perform
each step diligently to ensure the proper activation and benefit of the
mantras.
Perform
these rituals for personal spiritual growth and not for gaining materialistic
or harmful purposes.
Follow
the guidance of a knowledgeable teacher to understand the deeper aspects and
avoid any mistakes.
Prohibitions:
Homam (Fire Ritual): Never perform the fire ritual (Homam) without proper adherence to the prescribed rules.
Brahmin
Bhojanam (Feeding Brahmins): Do not
conduct the ritual of feeding Brahmins improperly or without due respect.
Thus ends 98th chapter in the Parashara Samhita, in the dialogue between Shri Parashara and Maitreya, describing
the method of the Hanumat Panchamukha
mantra.
